    Frequently asked Questions

    • Q1. What will be tested in the test for getting Canadian citizenship?

The exam reveals your knowledge of Canada. We'll quiz you on 20 topics related to Canadians' rights and obligations, including:

      • History
      • Geography
      • Economy
      • Government
      • Laws
      • Symbols

    • Q2. What to bring for the exam?

      • the "Notice to Appear" that asks you to take the test
      • a permanent resident (PR) card, if you have one
      • two different forms of personal identification
      • 1 form of identification featuring your picture and signature, such as a health card or driver's license
      • Canadian IDs do not need to be issued by the government. Foreign IDs must be issued by the government.
      • Unless it is in English or French
      • All of your passports and travel documents, both current and expired, that you listed on the application form.
      • A certificate, diploma, degree, or transcript attesting to your proficiency in English or French (if you were between the ages of 18 and 54 when you signed your application).

    • Q3. What happens if you don’t pass your first test?

We will arrange for you to take another test if you don't pass your initial written exam but still match the other criteria for citizenship. We'll send you a notification requesting that you appear at a hearing with a citizenship authority if you fail your second exam. The proceeding:

      • will last 30 to 90 minutes
      • can be conducted in person or through videoconference.
      • It may be used to evaluate one or more citizenship requirements, such as:
      • proficiency in the Canadian language

We will reject your application if, after three tries, you are unable to pass the test. To try once more, you can reapply.

Who can apply for Canadian citizenship?

Most applicants for citizenship in Canada must:
    • Be a permanent resident
    • Who has spent at least three of the previous five years (1,095 days) in Canada
    • Have paid their taxes
    • Passed a citizenship test
    • Shown proficiency in either English or French

Who has to take the test and go to the interview?

Based on your age and application, you may have to take the exam or attend the interview. Only adults of age 18-54 years are allowed to attend tests and give an interview.

    Prepare for the citizenship ceremony

Your last step before becoming a Canadian citizen is to take the Oath of Citizenship during a citizenship ceremony. There are citizenship ceremonies held all around the nation and throughout the year. During Citizenship Week and Canada Day, there are unique ceremonies.
